The Sun Hotel and Tea Room in Canterbury is right in the heart of the city centre, less than a minutes walk from the Cathedral and is steeped in history. The Sun, previously known as “Little Inn” was made famous by Dickens who reputedly not only stayed their but mentions it in his books. It sat derelict for nearly 40 years until the current owners loving bought it back to life a few years ago.

The rooms are all named and have been beautifully decorated, the limited space has been used extremely well to deliver high standard facilities. We stayed in the Dickens Room and the Marlow Suit.

The Dickens room was absolutely beautiful, it was recreated to a superb standard, if you are on the larger side you may struggle with the toilet and shower rooms which are again finished to a fantastic level and a clever use of space, but non the less a bit compact. The 4 Poster bed was a real treat as was the large flat screen tv on the wall above the fireplace.

The Marlow Suite wasn’t as well furnished or finished but if you are travelling with children the second separate bedroom with bunk beds and tv is a great idea.

As downstairs is a tea shop you need to go to the counter to check in and out, breakfasts are served in the Tea Shop and it is wonderful to come back after shopping, put your shopping in your room and enjoy afternoon tea in the coffee shop. We also enjoyed having the tea shop to ourselves in the evening when we would meet up for a couple of drinks before heading out for dinner

The one downside for us of is that it is in the pedestrian area, you can get through to drop off your luggage but do need to park in the public car parks outside the city walls. Never the less well worth staying at
